There are numerous reasons to visit the unspoilt and lesser known region of Le Marche, and although it does not have the same fame and fortune as its neighbours, Tuscany and Umbria, it is nonetheless a fantastic destination for an Italian holiday. And there are some wonderful properties out there, from sprawling farmhouses to charming country cottages. Many people are drawn to Le Marche by its natural beauty, from the Adriatic Sea on one side to the spectacular Apennine Mountains on the other. If you want to be near the coast then you could stay somewhere like Relais Villa Giulia, a mixture of B&B and apartments done up in elegant Napoleonic style. On the other hand, if alpine scenery is more your thing, why not head for Torre Tenosa, a restored 14th century watchtower with views of Monti Sibillini National Park:
The Le Marche coastline is certainly very attractive, and it is much less crowded than many Mediterreanean hot spots. Sirolo on the Conero Peninsula is particularly pretty, and Monte Conero, which is just south of Ancona, is a high limestone mountain right by the sea which shelters several lovely little resorts. But many would argue than inland Le Marche is where you will experience the ‘real’ and untouched Italy. Caserma Carina Country House is a self-catering holiday property that offers the best of both worlds. Thirty minutes from the coast and forty minutes from the mountains, it offers the kind of sensational rural scenery which will take your breath away. The 19th century Italian country house has been divided into four luxurious apartments, surrounded by a large swimming pool, landscaped gardens, and panoramic views. Relaxing and secluded and yet within walking distance of the ancient town of Modigliano, Caserma Carina is the perfect base for a Le Marche holiday.
If you want natural wonders, there are plenty on offer here. The region is full of nature parks waiting to be explored, the scenery around Monte Catria is stunning, the limestone caves at Frasassi are a marvel, and the Furlo Gorge (a dramatic natural pass through the mountains) is unmissable. Likewise, there are numerous towns that you must make time for. Urbino is a beautiful Renaissance city where you will find delightful art and architecture, Ancona is a bustling sea port, Macerata is a lovely town famous for its annual outdoor opera festival and Fermo is a hill town with a historic centre. You should also make time for the old town of Ascoli Piceno with its travertine-paved main square, for the seaside resort of Pesaro and for smaller inland towns like Cagli, Camerino, Cingoli, Jesi, Offida, Recanati and Sarnano. Whichever province you visit, Le Marche offers lovely weather, cultural attractions and gorgeous scenery without the crowds. And with a selection of properties of all shapes and sizes on offer, there really is something to suit everyone.
